Unleashing the Electric Vehicle (EV) potential in Pakistan
The honourable Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, to introduce Electric Vehicles (EV) in Pakistan is initiated by marking a subsidy of Rs 4.0 billion to the consumers of 2 & 3 wheelers. His aim is to increase the EV market share by 30 % for 2,3 and 4 wheelers and to establish 3000 EV charging stations by 2030. To further boost the use of EVs, 100 top performers students (FBISE) will be given free bikes/scooties based on a bidding process.
This would reduce the dependency on import of fuel and slow down the high carbon emissions vehicles towards cleaner technologies. Ministry of Industries and Production in its endeavours to promote EVs is in the process of formulating an Eco system for which EDB is working to firm up a detailed policy framework in due consultation with the stakeholders.
EDB was arrange to showcase the EV bikes at the initiative of Mr KB Ali, CEO (EDB). Honourable Minister of Industries and Production Mr. Rana Tanveer along with Mr. Saif Anjum, Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production and other senior officials visited EDB to decide the EV bikes samples selection for Prime Minister’s scheme.
Engineering Development Board’s role is to ensure that the OEMs selected for Prime Minister’s Scheme are based on a pre-qualification criteria of the product based on the quality of the product and its performance. In this regard, the senior officials of EDB visited OEMs in Lahore and Karachi and selected samples that fits best on the pre-qualification criteria. However, the procurement shall still be executed under competitive bidding process as per PPRA rules.
